Picture this: you’re at a nice charity event, there’s an open bar and a silent auction. You peruse the offerings, excited about getting something cool while also supporting the community, and then you see it. At the end of the table is a large basket overflowing with … office supplies.  Yup. I said office supplies.

More often than not, it does not matter what type of supplies either. Pens, pencils, paper, post-its, notecards, and whatever else. If you can find it at Staples or Office Depot, I need it. Even if I don’t really need it.  Trying new pens to see how they write, using colorful post-it notes to mark absolutely nothing important, I love everything about office supplies.  I love things like starting a brand-new notebook – the blank pages and oh so many possibilities!  I once bought a cell phone holder for desk … in the shape of a cat. Yeah, it was awesome.

I love office supplies so much that every three or four months, I go through all of them and donate a lot of it.  Then I have room for new office supplies! Trust me, I know this is a bit ridiculous.

Ironically, as a business organizer, I urge people to be more electronic and less paper, to have less clutter, and to not waste money on things that aren’t necessary to their business.  If only I could practice what I preach when it came to office supplies but honestly, there are worse addictions.

So, what am I going to do about my office supply addiction? Not. A. Thing.

It doesn’t hurt anyone and they truly give me joy. Am I wasting money? It depends on how you look at it.  I would say that I am stimulating the economy and then supporting organizations in my community.  I would tell you that I spend my money on things that make me happy, and then I would probably send you a nice note card.
